Wind Energy

The Power of Wind

The power of the wind has been harnessed for thousands of years. As technology has advanced, the wind has been used for grinding grain, pumping water and providing electricity to farms beyond the reach of power lines. Today, wind farms use the energy contained in prevailing winds to generate electricity for homes and businesses.

Our businesses’ wind projects not only foster economic development but they also demonstrate Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s commitment to renewable energy and environmental respect. MidAmerican Energy Company is ranked first in the nation in ownership of wind-powered electric generation among rate-regulated utilities. And PacifiCorp is the second-largest rate-regulated owner of wind-powered generation in the nation. NV Energy has completed Nevada's first utility-scale wind energy project. And BHE Wind continues to focus its operations on unregulated wind-powered generation projects.

Ranked No. 1

At year-end 2018, MidAmerican Energy Company had more than 6,500 megawatts of owned wind generation capacity in operation and construction – the most among rate-regulated energy providers in the U.S.

Capacity Expansion

By the end of 2020, PacifiCorp plans to add 1,150 megawatts of new wind resources and upgrade, or repower, 999 megawatts of existing wind resources. The new wind projects are expected to power 400,000 typical homes annually.

Delivering Wind Energy

Local Economic Impact

In May 2018, MidAmerican Energy Company announced an additional investment of $922 million with its Wind XII project. Like MidAmerican Energy's other wind projects, Wind XII is being constructed at no net cost to the company’s customers and will help stabilize customers’ electric rates over the long term.

MidAmerican Energy's wind development provides long-term economic sustainability:

  • $6.9 million in Iowa property taxes on wind turbines
  • $5.6 million in annual landowner easement payments
  • 300 full-time construction jobs, with 28 full-time positions for ongoing operations and maintenance
