Northern Powergrid Recognized as World Leader in Health and Safety

The network operator was awarded The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Order of Distinction in both of its license areas and, additionally, a Gold Award for Fleet Safety.

The accolade marks twenty-two consecutive years of Gold Awards in its North East license area, and nineteen consecutive years of Gold Awards in its Yorkshire license area.

Also, for the second year, the company achieved a specialist Gold Award for Fleet Safety in both license areas.

The RoSPA Health and Safety Awards is the largest occupational health and safety awards program in the UK. Now into its 67th year, the Awards have almost 2,000 entries annually; covering nearly 50 countries and a reach of over seven million employees.

The program recognizes organizations’ commitment to continuous improvement in the prevention of accidents and ill health at work.

To be awarded an Order of Distinction in both license areas and a Gold Award for Fleet Safety is the highest praise and recognizes Northern Powergrid’s commitment, and the commitment of its colleagues, to the ongoing improvement in health and safety performance across the business.

Julia Small, RoSPA’s Achievements Director, said: “Accidents at work and work-related ill health don’t just have huge financial implications or cause major disruption – they significantly impact an individual’s quality of life. That’s why good safety performance deserves to be recognised and rewarded.

“We would like to congratulate all those who have won a reward for showing an unwavering commitment to keeping their employees, clients and customers safe from accidental harm and injury.”

Gareth Pearson, Northern Powergrid’s Head of Health, Safety and Training, said: “Our biggest commitment, as a business, is to ensure that our colleagues and our contractors get home safely to their families at the end of every working day.

“Receiving these awards is testament to the dedication of every single member of our team to improving our health and safety performance.”

Organizations and businesses receiving a RoSPA Award are recognized as being world-leaders in health and safety practice. Every year, nearly 2,000 entrants contend to achieve the highest possible accolade, in what is the UK’s longest-running health and safety industry awards.
