Idaho Potato Processing Company Honored for Reducing Energy Use by 10 Percent

Rocky Mountain Power announced
Basic American Foods the 2014 wattsmart Business Partner of the Year in Idaho for its commitment to energy efficiency. The company reduced its electrical consumption at its potato processing plant in Shelley by 10 percent which will result in $210,000 in savings annually.
“By becoming more energy efficient, Basic American Foods is a model for other companies on how to make good products and good business decisions,” said Rocky Mountain Power President Richard Walje. “Conserving energy is the cleanest and least expensive energy possible.”
Walje presented the award to Basic American Foods Engineering Manager Brent Turner during the Idaho Customer and Community Meeting in Rigby.
Basic American Foods is a family owned and operated company that began in 1933 and is known for innovation and making convenient potato and bean products. Last year the company invested $437,500 in energy efficiency projects at its Shelley plant and received $209,000 in incentives from Rocky Mountain Power. The plant is expected to use 3.3 million kilowatt hours less each year and lower its annual energy bill by $210,000.
Rocky Mountain Power customers in Idaho are also making a real difference in energy efficiency. In 2013, they reduced the electricity peak load by 20,200 megawatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to powering nearly 1,700 homes for a year.
